Wendy Wickham, Artistic Director

Wendy Wickham began singing choral music as a five-year old choir girl in Baltimore, Maryland.  She received her B.S. in Music Education, with an emphasis in piano/organ and voice, from Lebanon Valley College.  She holds an M.A. in piano performance from Towson University.  Upon graduation, Ms. Wickham attended conducting workshops and master classes at Eastman University and Westminster Choir College.  Ms. Wickham has taught in public and private schools and has been the organist and music director for various congregations for over 15 years.  She is currently a private teacher, soloist, and performer in the Baltimore/Washington region.  She assumed the directorship of The Canticle Singers in 1997.

Douglas Buchanan, Accompanist

Hailed for his “sense of creative imperative” (The Philadelphia Inquirer) and “ability to get under the skin of [the music’s] core material” (The Scotsman), Douglas Buchanan (b. 1984) is an active composer, conductor, performer, and educator in the greater Baltimore/D.C. area. He is Choirmaster and Organist of the St. David’s Episcopal Church in Baltimore and Artistic Director of the Maryland Choral Society, and teaches as composition faculty at Dickinson College and music theory and musicology faculty at the Peabody Conservatory, where he earned his doctorate in 2013. His compositions have been praised for being “filled with terrific orchestral color and weight, not to mention feeling” (The Baltimore Sun) and have garnered numerous awards and prizes. He was recently appointed as Composer-in-Residence for the Dallas Chamber Symphony through 2018, during which time, in addition to composing chamber and orchestral works, he will mentor young composers and create music to benefit underprivileged audiences.

As a choral conductor, he has been praised for “a keen sense of mood, dynamics, and pacing” and eliciting “assured, nuanced singing” from the ensembles he leads (The Baltimore Sun). He was recently awarded 2nd Place in the American Prize for Choral Conducting (Community Chorus Division). A 2016 Dean’s Incentive Grant Recipient from the Peabody Conservatory, Buchanan founded Voices Rise: A Baltimore Choir of Hope, a choir inviting all people, regardless of background, to make music together. This project is a partnership between Peabody, St. David’s, and the Paul’s Place Outreach Center in Southwest Baltimore. Buchanan is fortunate to have many opportunities to make music with his wife, Kelly, a mezzo-soprano, and also enjoys microtonal interspecies improvisation with his black lab, Grover.
